Fear not, November does have a meeting of the Panama Historical Society!
The Panama Historical Society cordially invites you to its November 2006 meeting, to be held on Wednesday, November 01, 2006 at 7:30 PM - "Niko's Cafe" (the old Balboa Bowling Alley" site in the port area of Balboa... That's today!
Please also read the bottom of this note for some information about our Christmas and XX Anniversary Celebration in December. Yes, this year we celebrate our 20th Anniversary, and we have a fine location for such a newsworthy event.
Our estemeed guest speaker for the evening is Mr. Gerry Dowden from the Panama Broadcasting Corporation S.A. His presentation will let us know about the current state and the future of English language radio broadcasting in the Republic of Panama, a topic which is of much interest to our membership.
The lack of true English language radio programming affects a lot of people, not just expatriates, but also Panamanians, who, like myself, learned English through the broadcasts of the SCN (Southern Command Networks) in the pre-canal handover days.
Mr. Dowden was kind enough to send along the following comments:
"Thank you very much for the opportunity to talk to the Historical Society with regard to our new venture into the Broadcasting business.
A little background without leaving us with nothing to say next week! I believe this is a prime example of the well utilized expression "Put your Money where your Mouth is" literally. The corporation is owned by four shareholders and is structured in such a way as to meet the Panamanian 65% majority as required to contemplate developing seriously such a venture. In considering how to establish a presence various options were considered, the purchase of existing facilities, taking airtime or just telling each other what a great job we could have done. We will elaborate on how and why we went in the direction we did, where we want to go and why, when we see you. The one thing that we were in 100% agreement was professionalism that when we did it, it was done to a high standard. I had a limited career in Broadcasting in the Middle East many, many, many, many moons ago but it was a serious grounding, we worked to BBC standards and not just working "on the air" but station management, program planning etc."
As for our Christmas Celebration, on December 06, 2006, our President, Mr. John Carlson, has secured a fancy and well-liked location, which has already been our Christmas meeting place three times in the past twenty years, the Trattoria d' Americas, from Chef Rafael Ciniglio.
He has sent us a personalized menu which we reproduce at the bottom of this email, for PHS members to make their selections from. The Christmas Dinner will have a cost of USD$26.00 and that includes entree, main course, dessert and two glasses of wine, plus tax. Please make sure you forward your reservations to John (jcarlson@cwpanama.net) ASAP.
Any questions, please feel free to contact our PHS President John Carlson (jcarlson@cwpanama.net) or the Secretary, Carlos Hassán at chassan@panamahistoricalsociety.org
