The Panama Historical Society takes great pleasure in extending an invitation to the Gala Presentation of the new book, "SOCIEDAD, ECONOMIA Y CULTURA MATERIAL, HISTORIA URBANA DE PANAMA LA VIEJA" by Dr. Alfredo Castillero Calvo.
The Event will be on Monday, July 10th, 2006, at 7 p.m. at the Teatro Nacional de Panamá.
The book has been issued in Spanish. A quick summary of the book by the author (and translated by yours truly) follows:
A little over one thousand pages long, it is printed in Buenos Aires and has been sponsored by the Patronato de Panamá Viejo (which should correctly be called Panamá la Vieja) and it is the result of a lifetime of research; it is fundamentally based on archival sources (mainly Spanish archives and in particular Seville's Archivo de Indias): It comprises 21 chapters, some very extense, which deal with just about anything from the Panamanian colonial past (and not only the Panama La Vieja urban circuit); though its temporal limit is 1671 (Morgan's attack).
Several aspects extend well into the XVIII Century; it includes an ample study of the Church, ecclesiastical monuments, religion, art, daily life, dietary patterns and subsidies, the city's food supply, the intellectual and material culture, parties, books and several chapters are dedicated to reconstructing the character and behavior of our society, especially the elite, by applying the prosopographic method (contextualized collective biographies); a chapter locates Panama at the center of the great global crisis of the XVII century, which serves as the starting point for a new book the author is preparing on a global level and which will be published in 2007 (this is breaking news!). The book brings numerous graphics and illustrations, and in the back, hitherto unseen abundant color images. Definitely it has a lot of content and is a work for anyone who is seriously interested in knowing about our colonial past. You are all welcome.
At the entrance of the Teatro Nacional will be a Patronato sales stand. I believe they will be offered for USD$60.00 and they have provisions for accepting credit cards, but it wouldn't hurt to take cash. Then it will be sold at city bookstores. Or you may contact the author.
At the end of the presentation, there will be snacks, and the author is sure that some of the buyers will corner him for his signature!

La Sociedad Histórica de Panamá tiene el gran placer de extender una invitación a la Gala Presentación del nuevo libro, "SOCIEDAD, ECONOMIA Y CULTURA MATERIAL, HISTORIA URBANA DE PANAMA LA VIEJA" por el Dr. Alfredo Castillero Calvo.
El evento será el Lunes, 10 de Julio de 2006, a las 7 p.m. en el Teatro Nacional de Panamá.
El libro ha sido lanzado en Español. A continuación, un rápido resumen del libro por el autor:
"Tiene algo más de mil páginas, está impresa en Buenos Aires y ha sido patrocinada por el Patronato de Panamá Viejo (lo correcto seria decir Panamá la Vieja) y es el resultado de toda una vida de investigación; se basa fundamentalmente en fuentes de archivo (sobre todo archivos españoles y en particular el Archivo de Indias de Sevilla); comprende 21 capitulos, algunos muy extensos, que tratan de casi cualquier cosa sobre el pasado colonial panameño (y no solo sobre el circuito urbano de Panamá la Vieja); aunque su límite temporal es 1671 (ataque de Morgan) varios aspectos se extienden hasta muy adentro del siglo XVIII; incluye un amplio estudio de la Iglesia, los monumentos eclesiásticos, la religiosidad, el arte, la vida cotidiana, los patrones dietéticos y las subsistencias, el abastecimiento alimenticio de la ciudad, la cultura material e intelectual, las fiestas, los libros y varios capítulos estan dedicados a reconstruir el carácter y comportamiento de nuestra sociedad, sobre todo las élites, aplicando el método prosopográfico (biografías colectivas contextualizadas); un capítulo sitúa a Panamá en el centro de la gran crisis global del siglo XVII, lo que me sirve de punto de partida para otro libro que estoy preparando a nivel global y que se publicara en 2007 (es una primicia). El libro trae numerosas gráficas e ilustraciones, y en la parte de atrás abundantes imágenes a color hasta ahora desconocidas. En fin que tiene mucha tela y es una obra para cualquiera que esté seriamente interesado en conocer nuestro pasado colonial. Serán bienvenidos.
A la entrada del Teatro Nacional estarán a la venta por el Patronato. Creo que se ofrecerán a 60 dólares y tienen previsto el uso de tarjetas de credito, aunque no estara demas que lleven dolares. Luego se venderán en las librerías de
